AI Search, GEO & the changing search landscape

What is genuinely changing—without losing the durable foundations or getting caught by hype.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO

SEO improves organic visibility across search experiences. AEO and GEO describe a greater focus on answer and generative experiences, but their boundaries are inconsistent. Google treats optimisation for generative search as part of SEO, so “AI search”, “AI visibility” and “organic discovery” are often clearer descriptions of the work.

How generative search works

At a high level, systems may use retrieval or grounding, break a question into related searches, retrieve supporting information and synthesise an answer. This is sometimes called query fan-out. Citations can expose sources, but not every mention is cited and each platform works differently. Proprietary internals should not be guessed at.

How AI visibility differs

Keywords, prompts, rankings, mentions and citations describe related but different parts of discovery. Do not combine them into one universal visibility score.

Search queries and rankings

A query produces an ordered set of results. Keyword demand, positions, impressions and clicks can be measured over time.

Prompts and synthesis

Prompts are longer, more variable and may be broken into several related searches. Prompt tracking can reveal patterns, but it is not equivalent to keyword-volume or rank tracking.

Which SEO tools should a new content writer learn first?

Mentions, citations and zero-click

A mention names a brand; a citation attributes a source. Neither automatically indicates ranking, endorsement or commercial impact. Answers can also influence decisions without producing a measurable visit.

What affects discoverability

Strong foundations make information easier to retrieve, understand and verify. They improve eligibility and usefulness, but do not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer.

Groundable information

Use specific, current claims with clear provenance. Original evidence, useful examples, accurate headings, dates and cited sources make information easier to support and verify.

Brand context beyond your site

Relevant publishers, documentation, reviews, forums, communities and PR can create corroborating information about a brand. Off-site mentions are context—not a guaranteed tactic.

Crawling, indexing and controls

Normal crawlability and indexability still matter. Platform controls differ: OAI-SearchBot supports ChatGPT search, while GPTBot relates to potential model training. Check robots.txt, noindex rules and current first-party documentation.

Measure AI visibility without overclaiming

Use first-party platform data where it exists, then connect visibility to site behaviour and business outcomes. Coverage and definitions vary, so record the source, date range and limitations of every metric.

GEO myths worth challenging

Myth

llms.txt guarantees visibility

Reality: It may provide guidance to some systems, but it does not replace crawlability, indexability or useful content. No major platform guarantees visibility from it.

Myth

Special AI schema is a universal answer

Reality: There is no universal AI schema. Use supported structured data when it accurately describes the page—not speculative markup created only for AI search.

Myth

AI keyword density exists

Reality: There is no reliable repetition formula for AI visibility. Clear, relevant and supportable information matters more than repeating particular terms.

Myth

Prompt volumes equal keyword volumes

Reality: Prompt datasets are usually limited samples, while conversational phrasing varies widely. Their figures are not directly comparable with conventional search volume.

Myth

A tool score is ground truth

Reality: Scores depend on the tool’s prompts, models, locations, timing and methodology. Treat them as directional evidence rather than definitive market visibility.

Myth

Citations can be guaranteed

Reality: Answers and their sources can change between prompts and over time. Good content can improve eligibility, but nobody can guarantee a citation.

What should a junior focus on?

  1. Learn normal SEO well.
  2. Understand how AI answers differ from search results.
  3. Produce useful, specific information.
  4. Understand brand visibility outside your website.
  5. Assess citations and mentions.
  6. Check crawl access and indexing controls.
  7. Use first-party measurement before proprietary scores.
  8. Follow evidence rather than hype.
